Physical Mental/EmotionalSocial What are some things we do to keep our social life healthy? How does this relate to the study of Sexual Health?

Now it’s time to review a little Human Reproduction 1.I will call on you in random order. 2.You will pronounce the word the best you can. 3.You’ll tell us if you put a “F” or “M” or “B” 4.You will tell the class what the term stands for.

Why are we doing this on day #1 you ask??? To refresh the important anatomy terms of 6 th Grade Health. To get you comfortable using these terms once again. To possibly learn something you missed in previous lessons.

1. testosterone A sex hormone that gives males their secondary sex characteristics. It is, however, found in smaller amounts in the female body as well. Correct answer: B

2. sperm The male sex cell needed to join with the female sex cell to create human life. Correct answer: M

3. genitals Genitals are simply the exterior “private parts” of a girl or boy. Correct answer? B

4. puberty I’m growing from a boy to a man. I’m growing from a girl to a woman Puberty is the time of life when the reproductive systems transform from being inactive to active. Correct answer: B

5. labia Labia are the external folds of tissue at the outer entrance to the female reproductive system. Correct answer: F

6. Pubic hair You previously learned that as our bodies move from childhood to adulthood, many changes take place. One of those changes is new hair growth to the under arms, chest, face, legs and pubic region. Correct answer: B

7. Ejaculation As the sperm leaves the male reproductive system, this process is known as an ejaculation. Correct answer: M

8. hormones Hormones are chemical messengers sent from the Endocrine Glands to many areas of the bodies. It is the introduction of new hormones sent to the reproductive systems which begins the transformation of “inactive” systems changing into “active” systems. Correct answer: B

9. ovaries Ovaries are the female sex glands. Baby girls are born with two of them. The tiny eggs within them lie dormant until puberty. Then the ovaries begin to release the eggs each month. Correct answer: F

10. cervix The cervix is a muscular tissue ring at the base of the uterus. Normally this muscle ring stays closed. During labor and delivery, it opens up or “dilates” in order for the baby to pass through the birth canal or vagina. Correct answer: F

11. menstruation Menstruation is the monthly shedding of blood built up in the lining of the uterus in preparation for a possible pregnancy. This lining is not needed if the egg is not fertilized, and therefore leaves the body every 28 days on average. Correct answer: F

12. testes Testes is plural for testicle. The testes are the two male sex glands present at birth. They do not begin to produce sperm (male sex cell) until puberty. Correct answer: M

13. vagina The vagina is a muscular passageway that connects the uterus to the outside of the body. It is the channel for the male reproductive system to deposit sperm, and the passageway for the baby to be born through. Correct answer: F

14. bladder The bladder is the organ which stores the liquid waste (urine) in our bodies. It is not part of the reproduction system. Correct answer: B

15. uterus The uterus is the organ designed to hold the growing baby for nine months during fetal development. Correct answer: F

16. Fallopian tubes Fallopian tubes are 4- inch tubes which move the egg from the ovary to the uterus. If fertilization (joining of egg and sperm) takes place, it occurs in the Fallopian tubes. Correct answer: F

17. Nocturnal emission Hint: Nocturnal means night. Emission (like emission system on a car) means to send out.

17. Nocturnal emission A nocturnal emission is the normal process of the male reproductive system releasing semen during sleep. Another, more common term for this is a wet dream. Correct answer: M

18. Estrogen, progesterone These are hormones which give girls and women their female sex characteristics, and help prepare the body for motherhood. Males have some estrogen but no progesterone. Correct answer: F

19. scrotum The scrotum is a sac- like pouch of skin that holds the testes. Testes need to be outside the body where the temperature is cooler in order to produce sperm. Correct answer: M

20. Ovulation Ovulation is the release of the mature egg from the ovary. The egg goes into a Fallopian tube toward the uterus. Correct answer: F

21. semen Sperm, and the fluid released by the prostate gland and seminal vesicles, is known as semen. Semen leaves the male reproductive system to be deposited into the female reproductive system. Correct answer: M

22. erection During sexual activity, blood fills the chambers of the male penis. In doing so, the male organ becomes erect to enter the female vagina. Correct answer: M

23. chromosomes All human cells have 46 chromosomes. Sex cells (sperm and egg) have half that number, 23 each. As soon as the sperm unites with the egg, the new cell has 46 chromosomes. Chromosomes pass down characteristics such as eye, hair and skin color, and facial features. Correct answer: B

24. urethra The urethra is a small tube that leads from the bladder to the outside of the body. It is the passageway for the urine to leave the body. Correct answer: B It is not part of the reproductive system.

25. placenta The placenta is tissue that connects the developing baby to the mother’s uterus through the umbilical cord. Since it is sheared away from the uterus after the baby is born, it is often referred to as the “afterbirth.” Correct answer: F

26. foreskin When a baby boy is born, there is a fold of skin that covers the end of the penis. This excess skin can be surgically removed in a process called circumcision.

27. mammary glands Both sexes have mammary glands. In women they develop in order to feed the newborn baby. Correct answer: B

28. prostate The prostate gland produces a fluid to help nourish and transport the sperm out of the male body. Correct answer: M

29. epididymis The epididymis is positioned directly in back of the testicle. It is a chamber that stores the sperm prior to leaving the body. Correct answer: M

30. seminal vesicle Seminal vesicle The seminal vesicles produce a fluid (like the prostate) to help nourish and transport the sperm out of the body. Correct answer: M
