5 The Impact of New Media Technology on the Navajo Times5 Chapter 1 – Introduction – Statements of the Problem The problem of this research is to investigate weather or not it is a good idea for the Navajo Times to go digital and to see if the impact of new media is having an impact on the Navajo Times newspaper company today.

6 The Impact of New Media Technology on the Navajo Times6 Chapter 1 – Introduction – Limitations and Key Terms Limitations of the Project: This study is limited to the Navajo Times newspaper company on the Navajo Nation to show the significance of what the impact on rural areas are within the newspaper industry and see what new technology is being implemented today. This project is only limited to discussing the relating material with newspapers and new media and will not discuss the process of the newspaper printing process. Key Terms: –Facebook– A social networking website that is operated and privately owned by Facebook, Inc. –Penny Press – Penny Press newspapers were cheap, tabloid-style papers produced in the middle of the 29 th century. –Twitter– A free social networking networking and microblogging service that enables its users to send and read messages known as tweets. –Wi-MAX – A telecommunications technology providing wireless data, voice, and video over long distances. Took them 2 years to get Internet access to 42 customers.

14 The Impact of New Media Technology on the Navajo Times14 Chapter 3 – Methodology – Sampling Techniques and Survey Instrument Sampling Techniques: –Navajo Times Employee Survey Publisher/CEO Editor Subscriber/Circulations Advertising Manager –Navajo Times Reader Survey Randomly selected at newspaper stands Survey Instrument: –Navajo Times Employee Survey was completed online via e-mail. –Navajo Times Reader Survey was completed Face-to-face recorded on paper (21 participants), and online (21 participants). –Esurveyspro.com was used for online surveys.

Readers were asked the same questions online and in person.

16 The Impact of New Media Technology on the Navajo Times16 Chapter 4 – Results of the Project – Response Rate of Complete Surveys 100% Response Rate of the Navajo Times Readers –50% of surveys was completed in person. –50% of surveys was completed online. 50% Response Rate of Navajo Times Employees –No response was received from the remaining 4 of 8 employees.

However, this is not possible for the Navajo Times as we have a unique readership base. We have to consider the pro’s and con’s of circulation & targeted areas”

22 The Impact of New Media Technology on the Navajo Times22 Chapter 5 – Conclusions 1.Newspapers are generally sold: Newsstands in print 2.88% of readers read the Navajo Times for local news. 3.81% of readers are unaware of social networks 4.57% of readers on the Reservation find it difficult to get access to the Internet. 5.Navajo Times employees agree 100% that social networks are a good way to network. 6.The Navajo Times will continue to have a printed edition of the Navajo Times, New Media has not effected the sales of the Navajo Times nor has it had a effect on the residents of the Navajo Nation.
