ADD & SUBTRACT MULTIPLY & DIVIDE Decimals

ADD & SUBTRACT DECIMALS Rewrite (problem) Move (decimals) Solve (problem)

ADD DECIMALS  (1) Rewrite the problem vertically.  (2) Line up the decimals.  (3) Enter place holders, as needed.  (4) Add or subtract. 23.4 + 12.05 23.4 + 12.05 23.4 + 12.05 23.40 + 12.05 23.40 + 12.05 35.45

SUBTRACT DECIMALS  (1) Rewrite the problem vertically.  (2) Line up the decimals.  (3) Enter place holders.  (4) Add or subtract. 23.4 - 12.05 23.4 - 12.05 23.4 - 12.05 23.40 - 12.05 23.40 - 12.05 11.35

MULTIPLY & DIVIDE DECIMALS Rewrite (problem) Solve (problem) Move (decimals)

MULTIPLY DECIMALS  (1) Rewrite the problem vertically with the longest (not largest) number on top.  (2) Multiply.  (3)Count the number of decimals in the multiplicand and the multiplier.  (4) Move the decimal from the end of the product the total number of spaces. 12.05 x 23.4 2.4 x 12.05 12.05 x 2.4 4820 + 24100 28920

22 5 DIVIDE DECIMALS  (1) Rewrite the problem in long division form. *Place the dividend (the first number) inside the vinculum. Place the divisor (the second number) outside the vinculum.  (2) Move any decimal in the divisor to the right as many times as needed to make it a whole number.  (3) Move the decimal in the dividend to the right the same number of times it was moved in the divisor. *Add zeros if needed.  (4) Divide using place holders in the quotient and the dividend as needed.  (5) Bring up the decimal from the dividend into the quotient. | 22.5 ÷ 2.25 0 00 1 - 225 0 0 0 2 25
