Hernando de Sota explored the land that is now TN. The British built Fort Loudoun along theT N River. James Robertson convinced a group to move to TN (Elizabethan).

First settler was James Bean along the Watauga River in East TN. There were 85 farms along the Watauga and Holston Rivers. Richard Henderson engineered massive land purchase from the Cherokees near Sycamore Shoals. Tennessee became the 16th state with 3/4 of the land belonging to Cherokees. All of TN was opened up when the Indians were persuaded to sell their land.

Ended the Cherokee presence in TN and the Indians were sent to Oaklahoma (Trail of Tears). Population surge in TN when the railroad moved into Tennessee. The population had reached 2,000,000 by this date. TN ratification of the 19th amendment gave women the right to vote.

The first radio station came to TN. The Grand Ole Opry was established in TN. The Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) was established. Smoky Mountains became a National Park.
