Tuesday November 30, 2010 Exploring the Parts of a Cell

Bell Ringer.. This will be collected and graded! Write a summary of what you’ve learned about each objective from yesterday’s class. (7 minutes) 1. Understand that cells, the smallest unit of life, have all of the unifying characteristics of life. 2. Understand the size of cells, relative to other organic molecules. 3. Review progress from the midterm assessment, and introduce the unit plan for the next three weeks.

Let’s look at the parts of the cell http://learn.genetics.utah.edu/content/begi n/cells/insideacell/ http://learn.genetics.utah.edu/content/begi n/cells/insideacell/ On your cell worksheet – take important notes about the cell’s function.

How can we remember the parts of the cell? Using objects as analogies.. ◦ What idea do these objects convey?

Cell City Parts Widget – Important product produced (protein) Small shops to make widgets: Ribosomes Town Hall: Nucleus Carts to move widgets around: Endoplasmic Reticulum Post office to package widgets: Golgi Apparatus Power plant: Mitochondria Gate to let important things in/out: Cell Membrane

The cell city produces widgets… The cell’s ribosomes produce proteins. Proteins are the building blocks of life. Main functions: ◦ Structure ◦ Movement ◦ Driving chemical reactions (Enzymes)

The most important function of the cell….. Produce proteins Proteins are the machinery of living tissue that builds the structures and carries out the chemical reactions necessary for life. Proteins build all of the cell parts!!!

Now.. Make your own analogy for the cell. Can you think of objects that will help you remember the function of each cell part????

Homework: Finish your analogy from class…. Make sure to tell what each cell part represents in your analogy.
