Matthew Moulson for the LAV Working Group NA62 Photon Veto Working Group Meeting CERN, 09 June 2015 LAV preparations for restart
2
LAV preparations for restart – M. Moulson (Frascati/CERN) – Photon Veto WG – CERN – 09 June 2015 A12/New CHOD light shielding 2 0.5-mm aluminium foils placed on front and back of A12 Light tightness & RF shielding for both A12 and NewCHOD A12 moved and replaced—survey confirms original position to ~1mm 5 May 2015

LAV preparations for restart – M. Moulson (Frascati/CERN) – Photon Veto WG – CERN – 09 June 2015 General notes on repair & maintenance 3 Repair work 27 Apr–08 May (Tania & Vincenzo) Complete HV scan, all LAVs Complete scan of all known bad channels Detailed signal diagnostics for LAVs A1/A5 All problems resolved (or addressed) in principle New, comprehensive scan of bad channels needed
4
LAV preparations for restart – M. Moulson (Frascati/CERN) – Photon Veto WG – CERN – 09 June 2015 Work on racks to be done 4 Dust abatement: A4-A5 racks need to be reorganized All racks need to be vacuumed General organization: Cables need to be adjusted for LAVs 3-8 Cable trays need to be adjusted for LAVs 6-8 A7 needs to be straightened
5
LAV preparations for restart – M. Moulson (Frascati/CERN) – Photon Veto WG – CERN – 09 June 2015 HV status 5 Repair work 27 Apr–08 May (Tania & Vincenzo): All known HV problems repaired Replaced 3 cables and 1 HV board Found 1 channel with HV probably too low 5 new cables produced in Apr: 2 spares remaining General test of HV system – in principle no problems remaining DCS status for HV: LAV crates now on NA62 private network GECO can only be used via Windows gateway or cerntsna62 MM got expert training and access from Valeri & Piotr Piotr created new expert tool for loading of HV recipes from files Ready to generate and upload definitive HV map HV interlock status: Pumping will be started today DSS interlock enabled – do not override! If DSS needs to be temporarily disabled, use INHIBIT function

LAV preparations for restart – M. Moulson (Frascati/CERN) – Photon Veto WG – CERN – 09 June 2015 FEE/signal status 6 Diagnostic & repair work 27 Apr–08 May (Tania & Vincenzo): Completed oscilloscope scan of known bad signal channels In principle, no bad channels inside vacuum Detailed diagnostics for LAVs A1-A5 4 TDCBs with connector problems sent to Pisa 3 with connector problems (dead ch 16) + 1 with noise (2 chs) Pisa unable to reproduce problems in lab – boards returned Connectors dressed with kapton tape and boards reinstalled 3 FEE boards changed Subsequent lab diagnostics showed no problems Need new, comprehensive survey of bad channels DAQ now running regularly – can attempt bulk scan using pulsers and online monitor E.g. pulse DAQ at 10 kHz, FEE at 2 khZ – 600 cts/ch in 1 hr TEL62 for LAV10 replaced DIP switches for JTAG chain need to be set

LAV preparations for restart – M. Moulson (Frascati/CERN) – Photon Veto WG – CERN – 09 June 2015 New system for threshold control 7 Components: Run control (RC) interface Sends “set threshold” command to LAVDCS via DIM Obtains threshold and board status information posted continuously on DIM and records in database LAVDCS Demon running on Raspberry Pis Receives command over DIM to set thresholds from RC and executes LAVFEE-comm Runs LAVFEE-comm at SoB/EoB and posts thresholds to DIM LAVFEE-comm Script running on Raspberry Pis to handle serial communications with FEE boards

LAV preparations for restart – M. Moulson (Frascati/CERN) – Photon Veto WG – CERN – 09 June 2015 New system for threshold control 8 RC interface status: Nicolas & Francesco have a prototype RC interface Displays individual thresholds for each board Database will record individual thresholds for each board At the moment, the set threshold command transmits only 2 threshold values to entire system (low, high thresholds) LAVDCS status: Commands:Set_threshold, 1 per station, board Services:Board_ID, 1 per station, board Threshold[ch], 1 per station, board, channel ADC[ch], 1 per station, board, channel Updated, 1 per station, board Need to implement services for transmssion of individual channel thresholds if we decide we want to transmit a map Need to check functionality of Updated service as test of validity of information on DIM

LAV preparations for restart – M. Moulson (Frascati/CERN) – Photon Veto WG – CERN – 09 June 2015 New system for threshold control 9 LAVFEE-comm, Raspberry Pi & FEE status LAVFEE-comm substantially rewritten to improve robustness, decrease latency Streamlined output for easy parsing & posting on DIM Blocking/unblocking on SoB/EoB No serial operations during spill Standardized routines for serial communications Standardized diagnostics and robust error-recovery procedures FEE “firmware” modifications: Remove spurious characters during communcation Change command parsing so only fully-spelled, unambiguous commands are executed Uploaded FW into 81 boards Reconfigured Raspbery Pi infrastructure Installed 5 new Raspberry Pi 2Bs for LAVs 1-5 Elimination of all USB hubs – all boards are now connected directly to a Pi

LAV preparations for restart – M. Moulson (Frascati/CERN) – Photon Veto WG – CERN – 09 June 2015 Online monitor 10 Online monitor is under revision List of new tabs & histograms defined Extensive details on NA62 Twiki https://twiki.cern.ch/twiki/bin/view/NA62/ReferencePlots2015LAV Time windows Hardware occupancy (untriggered) Out-of-time occupancy (digi hits, reconstructed hits) Raw muon efficiencies (digi hits, reconstructed hits) Low-threshold fraction Anomalous hit-type fraction Until now, have focused on readiness of LAV HW ready, but now need to put emphasis on online monitor

LAV preparations for restart – M. Moulson (Frascati/CERN) – Photon Veto WG – CERN – 09 June 2015 Status of NIM paper 11 Starting from incomplete draft of standalone NIM paper on LAV, reorganized introductory material to interface with general NA62 NIM paper Status of sections: General system description: Fairly complete Construction: Fairly complete Front-end electronics: Fairly complete draft, needs review and update Primitives: Being rewritten by Francesco Test-beam performance: Needs review, perhaps some material to be eliminated Reconstruction and simulation: To be done Performance in 2014: To be done Current length: 11 pages in elsart.cls double column LaTeX
