IMSSA STRATEGIC PLAN FT Cawood – Outgoing President

Why? Plan required to deal with strategic matters Common voice when Council members deal with other bodies Blue-print for Council, the Executive and the Sub- Committees to handle new legislation, professional body and education issues

Background to Strategic Plan Strategic Plan developed before the 2010 AGM Approved at the Council Meeting on 8 February 2011 Aimed at key issues affecting mine surveyors: Education; Professional registration at PLATO; The role of the mine surveyor in mine planning; and CPD points for mine surveyors. Communicated in one of President’s notes in Journal

Responsibility IMSSA Executive implemented the plan The work is delegated to Committees, which must: Incorporate relevant points in agenda meetings; Set priorities, targets and strategies for implementation; Prepare the required documentation for approval; and Report on progress on targets at Council Meetings.

Point scale Done - 100% Work in progress  30 - 70% complete Not done or Just started 

Education Align Advanced Certificates with the HEQF  Establish standing of DMR Certificate of Competency on the NQF – 2011 PLATO Council decision: COM mine survey certificates also need evaluation in order to register MS(Pr.Cert.) for mine surveyors not meeting the PLATO MS requirement (i.e. No ND)  Communicate education model to members  Place career path with job opportunities on website  Participate in discussions on the future of the COM Certificates

Registration of Mine Surveyors Update PLATO guidance notes for registration criteria Approved @ AGM – FC to correct & send to PLATO Develop an IMSSA graphic model to explain registration categories. Membership statistics noted at PLATO AGM PMS = 132, MS (Pr. Cert) = 4, MS = 42, MST = 28 EAC to evaluate mine survey qualifications for purpose of MS (Pr. Cert.) to see if these equate to Diploma Mine surveyors who took advantage of the grandfather clause do not have this problem

IMSSA alliance: PLATO versus ECSA Inform PLATO of IMSSA concerns and proposals on several matters e.g. Mine Planning registration, DMR recognition, etc. Develop IMSSA position paper on registration of designations at SAQA as these become available (Mr Colin Bennett is the IMSSA representative at SAQA) 

ECSA Mine Planning Registration Request blanket exemption from any mine planning restrictions on mine surveyors from ECSA, recognising that design can only be done by a Mining Engineer, whereas planning, optimising and implementation require a body of competent persons and specialists  Maintain link with SAIMM by attending monthly SAIMM Council meetings 

CPD requirement for mine surveyors Task PLATO to create a framework for CPDs Communicate with members through Branches to expedite implementation  Feedback from PLATO AGM: Effective as from 1/1/2012 and applicable to MS and higher Members required to get minimum of 3 points/year Points: 1/2 day Conference/IMSSA meeting = 1/2 point; IMSSA membership = 1 point/year; Mentoring = 1 point/year; Publication of technical paper = 1 point Uploaded via the PLATO website - Proof and support documents to be kept for 5 years for auditing purposes

Geomatics Professions Bill IMSSA letter to Chief Surveyor-General - Our concerns are fundamental and as such we objected to the Bill The Bill denies mine surveyors from our current competence in favour of professional land surveyors. There is a disproportionate representation in favour of professional land surveyors on Council. Chief SG Report tabled at 2011 PLATO AGM CSG received all inputs - now with DLA Policy division Cannot say when the next draft bill will be ready for public release

Conclusion – Goalscape (63%)

Thank You!
