Where am I? I am 3770 km long I am the 3 rd longest river in the world I am the 10 th largest river in the world At my widest I am 1.5km wide A drop of water falling in the source is estimated to take 90 days to reach the mouth I flow through 10 states My source is in Minnesota My mouth is in the Gulf of Mexico

Learning objective: To be able to explain why the River Mississippi floods Key terminology River engineering Hard engineering Soft engineering River capacity Velocity Discharge

The Mississippi – A major global river

Flood events 1993 2008 2011 What can you find out about each of these floods?

Use the 1993 flood case study What were the causes of the flood? Human? Physical?

Add two additional images to support your notes. Annotate them with information from the text books:

Part 2 Learning objectives: To be able to describe and explain different river management techniques To identify and evaluate the river management techniques in place on the River Mississippi

How can flood risk be managed?

Use the text book p Complete the flood management table Use the information sheet to add notes on the Morganzana Spillway

Dams on the Rhône This is a dam generating HEP near Beauchastel. Dams can be multi-purpose: They hold back the spring meltwater and so stop the floods. They release this water in the dry summer to irrigate the intensive fruit and vegetable growing areas. The water is also used for cooling in the two nuclear power plants near Genissiat – Beugy and Creys- Malville. In addition, the dams produce hydroelectric power (HEP). What are the disadvantages of building dams?

Floodplain zoning

The River Mississippi Annotate the map with the locations of flood management Colour code hard and soft engineering Explain how the flood management decreases flooding risk

After the Lynmouth floods in 1952 revetments wider channel concrete banks Study the photograph. Explain how the changes will help to prevent flooding. What action was taken after the Lynmouth floods in 1952?

How should the flood risk be managed? Which scheme received the best score? Explain why.
