2 Overview of session Presentation outlining useful search strategies using online catalogues to find books and journals Demonstration of OLIS and TDnet to show how these strategies might work in practice Opportunities to practise with assistance available

3 Need for the session Libraries are the source of a tremendous range of books, manuscripts, journals, maps, CD-ROMs, etc. Online Public Access Catalogues (OPACs) provide a description and listing of the items held in the libraries. Users who are more confident with using online library catalogues are more likely to find items needed.

15 Using TDnet Tip: if you have a single word title, such as Science, select “exact phrase” from the drop down menu. You may get a choice of links, such as: Publisher – for latest issues (last 5-10 years) Highwire – 10 yrs full text freely available, but not the last 12 months. JSTOR UK – for the archive. –Choose Browse this journal to get list of back issues JSTOR is an archive of key scholarly journals, spanning many disciplines. Some date back to the 1600s.
