2 A noun is a word that names a person, place, thing or idea. A compound noun is a word made up of two nouns. For example: grapefruit, buttercup, marketplace, rattlesnake, snowflake bulldog and rainbow.

3 Can you find the compound nouns in the following sentences?

4 A group of masterminds decided to form a think tank in order to find solutions to problems they encountered.

5 Masterminds is a compound noun.

6 A tall semi truck got stuck under a low overpass. The think tank was hired to remove the truck.

7 Overpass is a compound noun.

8 One mastermind got out his chalkboard and asked the others to come up with suggestions on how to remove the truck.

9 Mastermind and chalkboard are compound nouns.

10 After scribbling a diagram in her notebook, one mastermind suggested digging up the road so the truck could be towed.

11 Notebook and mastermind are both compound nouns.

12 The other mastermind, looking up from the notes on her laptop, suggested removing the bridge.

13 Both mastermind and laptop are compound nouns.

14 The chairman of the think tank was perplexed because they could not find a simple solution. “We need to brainstorm some kind of answer!”

15 Chairman and brainstorm are compound nouns.

16 Finally, a child suggested, “Why not lower the truck by letting the air out of the tires? Then, you can pull it out with a tractor?” Before the eggheads could reply, the student ran to his school bus.
