September, 2009Genetics Objectives: SWBAT define essential terms to genetics SWBAT differentiate between genotype and phenotype Catalyst: What is the function of the ribosome? What do proteins do? Aaron thinks that taking drinking orange juice will keep him awake longer than water. Identify the independent and dependent variable.

Agenda- JAM PACKED OF FUN! Catalyst Review Tracking (Biology Resume) Genes Alleles Genotype/Phenotype Practice (Yes, we talkin’ bout practice) Exit Question

5
What is a GLE? A Grade Level Expectation These are the “topics” or “objectives” for every class you’ve ever taken The State of Louisiana comes up with these Biology has 52
6
Why am I telling you this? To empower you with your own education In this class you will track (or monitor) your own progress of “mastering” (or becoming an expert in) these GLEs.
7
Tracking You have exactly (NO MORE NO LESS) 12 minutes to fill out your resume. It should go quick. If you finish early, start test corrections. Write out question Write out correct answer! Write out why it is correct. When the timer rings, I expect your tables to be cleared of your tests and all resume turned into the group folder.

Where are we going with this? By the end of this unit- You should understand how inheritance works If your mother has blue eyes and your father has brown eyes, can you predict if their child will have blue or brown eyes? Can you calculate it? You will create your own mythical creature with its own traits and show its possible offspring
20
GENETICS Key Point #1: Organisms inherit genes from their parents. Genes are pieces of DNA that you inherit from your parents. ONE gene instructs the cell how to make ONE protein.
21
Check out my yarn… dawg. What does this whole spool of yarn represent? A chromosome. What does just one long piece of this yarn represent? A gene. What is each little part of the piece of yarn? DNA. Chromosome Gene DNA

Check out my picture… dawg
23
Wait a second… Can you roll your tongue? How come some of you can roll your tongue and some of you can’t? BECAUSE GENES CAN BE DIFFERENT! They come in different flavors…. called
24
Alleles Key Point #2: Alleles are different flavors (versions) of genes. There are two versions— dominant and recessive. You get one allele from mom and one allele from dad. More on dominant and recessive tomorrow.
25
Alleles and Traits A trait is a characteristic of an organism. Eye color, hair color, tongue rolling, ear lobes free or attached, etc. Remember, a gene determines a trait: Genes for eye color, tongue rolling, etc. An allele is a version of the trait. Brown or blue eyes. Can roll or cannot roll.
26
Genotype Key Point #3: Genotype is the combination of alleles inherited from the parents. Phenotype is the actual physical expression of the trait. Ex. Eye color genotype: Ee, EE, ee Ex. Eye color phenotype: Brown Eyes.
