4 The reality of our interconnected world Our students must develop the necessary skills, habits of mind and the moral and ethical values to be able to understand and manage the interconnectivity and complexity of the modern world.

5 INTERNATIONALLY MINDED  The aim of all IB programs is to develop internationally minded people who, recognizing their common humanity and shared guardianship of the planet, help to create a better and more peaceful world.

6 NOBEL PEACE PRIZE WINNERS Malala Yousafzai is the girl who stood up for education and was shot by the Taliban Nelson Mandela was a South African anti- apartheid revolutionary, politician, and philanthropist who served as President of South Africa from 1994 to 1999 Mother Teresa the order, "The Missionaries of Charity", whose primary task was to love and care for those persons nobody was prepared to look after. Kailash Satyarthi is an Indian children's rights and education advocate and an activist against child labor.

7 EVERYBODY CAN MAKE A DIFFERENCE RaSia Khepra created the anti- violence awareness campaign Project Orange Tree, which helps co-ordinate community activities to stimulate a conversation about the causes of gun violence and is supported by the rapper Lupe Fiasco.Project Orange Tree Jack Andraka created an inexpensive way to detect protein increases that are the early warning signs of pancreatic cancer. Kristen Powers, 18 Chapel Hill, North Carolina Organized other students in developing a community garden. Students bag and donate all the produce to the community.

10 FAMILIES NURTURING INTERNATIONAL MINDEDNESS  Have conversations with your child/children about world news. Make the discussion age appropriate for the students.  Here are some examples of things you could explore through the internet.  how other countries celebrate the beginning of winter  monitor the weather around the world  time zones and there relevance to a country’s culture  politics, health issues, poverty  In what ways are countries dependent on each other, financially, politically, etc….

11 LET’S REVIEW: INTERNATIONAL MINDEDNESS Our students must develop the necessary skills, habits of mind and the moral and ethical values to be able to understand and manage the interconnectivity and complexity of the modern world.

12 INTERCONNECTIVITY Interconnectivity refers to the state or quality of being connected together.

13 CIS HOUSE SYSTEM  WITH YOUR HELP, THE CIS HOUSE SYSTEM WILL TEACH OUR STUDENTS THE COOPERATION SKILLS THAT WILL MAKE YOUR CHILD/CHILDREN SUCCESSFUL IN THE GROWING INTERCONNECTIVITY OF OUR WORLD SOCIETY. WE (YOU AND US) WILL MODEL THE SKILLS AND TEACH THE SKILLS OF: COOPERATION PROMOTING POSITIVE INTERNDEPENENCE LEADERSHIP INDIVIDUAL AND MUTUAL ACCOUNTABLITY

16 LEADERSHIP  Each House is led and managed by a Head of House supported by House Captains. The House Captains are responsible for organizing community service opportunities, social events, and fund raising activities for the House. HEAD OF HOUSE (parent) HOUSE CAPTAINS Assistant Captain (parent/faculty) Activities Captain (student and parent) House Historian (student and parent) House Treasurer (parent) House Monitors (1 parent and 1 faculty)

17 COLLABORATION: HOUSE ACTIVITIES  The house activities are designed to benefit our entire school community while we model and teach the collaboration and leadership skills for our students. TUTORING PROJECT Each house needs to facilitate peer tutoring for students. Tutoring can be done outside of school.

18 COLLABORATION: HOUSE ACTIVITIES  ONE STUDENT ASSEMBLY Every HOUSE will be responsible for a 15 minute assembly, at the start of school day, focusing on your community service project.  BUILDING FUNDRAISER Each house will be responsible for organizing at least one fundraiser to contribute to the purchase of our building.

19 COLLABORATION: HOUSE ACTIVITIES  COMMUNITY SERVICE: Each house will need to plan and strategize inventive ways to work as a team to impact our local and/or global community  Go to Global Youth Service Day http://www.gysd.org/causes a project for the school year.http://www.gysd.org/causes Human Rights Education Health Environment Community Building Hunger

20 COLLABORATION: HOUSE ACTIVITIES  FAMILY FIELD DAY Parents, students, and faculty participate in an annual family field day.  ATTENDANCE AT SCHOOL EVENTS :  International Day  IB Parent Nights  PTA Meetings  Science Night/Science Fair  6 th Grade Exhibition Project Presentation  10 th Grade Personal Project Presentation

21 INDIVIDUAL & MUTUAL ACCOUNTABILITY  The HOUSE POINT system will promote individual and mutual accountability.  Students and adults who actively participate and contribute to the success of their House win House points and rewards.  Throughout the school year a running total of the House points will be awarded.  The House with the most number of points at the end of each grading period earns a field trip.  The House with the most number of points at the end of the school year, receives the School House trophy, engraved with the House name, as well as individual certificates for students in various categories in each House.

22 LET’S CREATE OUR BANNER  In most cultures, colors have significant meanings. For the colors of the houses, we take inspiration from the Chinese culture of Feng Shui.  On your table are slips of paper that have the meaning of the color of our house according to the art of Feng Shui, ( pronounced "fung shway“ ) -meaning wind water-

23 LET’S CREATE OUR BANNER  Discuss in your group  What are the words that stand out the most?  What images come to mind?  Come to a consensus on which image/picture best represents your group based on the definition of the color, your group’s personality, and the IB goal of International Mindedness.

24 CREATING OUR BANNER  Have someone in your group draw the image on the white construction paper on your table.  NOW review the words from the definitions of your color, international mindedness, and the learner profile.  Which words does your group most associate with?  Write the words around your picture.  Tape your contribution to the banner on the board.
