Sub-Categories Beginning Beginning + Working Within Working Within + Secure Secure + Met all end of year expectations Started some of the year group curriculum Mastery Met all end of year expectations and can apply to different contexts Started some of the year group curriculum with some independence

What does this mean? In its simplest form: Above secure for their current year group means a child is achieving above national expectations Secure for their current year group means a child is at national expectations Anything below secure for their current year group means a child is achieving below national expectations

If I had a child in Year 3 … Beginning + Band 4 A child had met all the end of year expectations for year 3 and has started to met some of the year 4 expectations Secure Band 3 At national expectations for the end of year 3 Working within Band 3 Just below national expectations – had met some of the expectations for year 3 but not all Secure Year 1 Well below national expectations as meeting all the end of year national expectations for a year 1 child

How is a Writing Grade Decided? Writing is assessed across 3 categories with equal weighting : Writing ideas fluently – spell quickly and accurately in legible, speedy handwriting Forming and communicating ideas which are organised for the reader Write creatively using standard English

The importance of spelling Pupil unable to be awarded secure band 3 (meeting national expectations) because he/she has not met the spelling expectations

Writing Secure + Apply the same standard of writing in all subjects and homework Explain their vocabulary, punctuation choices and the effect of the grammar technique used Explain why they have spelt a word in context of a spelling rule

How is a Reading Grade Decided? Reading is assessed across 2 categories with equal weighting : Composition Using a range skills to understand the meaning of texts, organisation, language as well as being able to compare and contrast texts Word Reading Speedy working out of the pronunciation of unfamiliar printed words and speed recognition of familiar words
