What is the Hour of Code? Introduce students of all ages to computer science “Every 21 st century student should have the opportunity to take part in creating technology that’s changing our world. The basics help nurture creativity and problem-solving skills, and prepare students for any future career.” An attempt to fix the diversity gap in CS.

Demonstration: Scratch https://scratch.mit.edu/ https://scratch.mit.edu/ Free software Online or Download (Windows, Mac, Linux) Lots of online support: examples, tutorials, online community, etc. Easy to learn, but can get complex it’s a Science Olympiad event this year Student example Tips

Demonstration: Alice http://www.alice.org/index.php http://www.alice.org/index.php Free software Download (Windows, Mac, Linux) Tutorials Available Version 2.x (51 videos if you search “Alice Programming by Steve” on YouTube) Version 3.x (video tutorials on Alice.org) Easy to Learn Drag and Drop Can do really cool animations without knowing many CS concepts Student Examples

Demonstration: Codea Used on the Ipad. Not free, but not expensive ($14.99) Text-based and event driven. Looks cool but can get complicate Online tutorials and references. Not as much as other stuff, but increasing Graphics – good application for other math skills Examples
