Figurative Language Terms Symbolism: the representation of something in symbolic form or the attribution of symbolic meaning or character to something Anaphora: the repetition of a word or phrase at the beginning of successive clauses (form of rhetoric) Aphorism: a terse saying embodying a general truth, or astute observation EXAMPLE: “Power tends to corrupt, and absolute power corrupts absolutely” (Lord Acton). Rhyme: to form a rhyme, as one word or line with another

Alliteration: the use of the same consonant ( consonantal alliteration ) or of a vowel, not necessarily the same vowel ( vocalic alliteration ), at the beginning of each word or each stressed syllable in a line of verse, Hyperbole: an extravagant statement or figure of speech not intended to be taken literally EXAMPLE: “to wait an eternity.” Allusion: a passing or casual reference; an incidental mention of something, either directly or by implication

Simile: a figure of speech in which two unlike things are explicitly compared Metaphor: a figure of speech in which a term or phrase is applied to something to which it is not literally applicable in order to suggest a resemblance Personification: the attribution of human nature or character to animals, inanimate objects, or abstract notions Onomatopoeia: the formation of a word by imitation of a sound Imagery: the formation of mental images through descriptive words
