Catalyst Review DNA is the genetic code. What part of DNA is the genetic code? Choose an answer and then explain why the other choices are wrong. A.The phosphate-sugar backbone B.The sugar C.The phosphate D.The bases The bases must be the code since they form a sequence that changes throughout DNA. Sugar-phosphate backbone holds the DNA’s shape.

Objectives By the end of today, SWBAT… Translate DNA and mRNA into an amino acid sequence. Describe the relationships among DNA, RNA, proteins, and traits.

Time for Notes…. Get ‘em out!
11
Translation Key Point #1: Translation is the process by which the ribosome reads the mRNA and uses its information to make protein Protein mRNA
12
The mRNA code The ribosome reads the mRNA one codon at a time. A codon is a set of three bases. Every codon contains the information to make one amino acid. Many amino acids make up a protein.
13
Table of CODONS Third Letter From your three letter codon, you can use this table to figure out what amino acid it is.
14
Let’s Practice Codon: UAC What is the amino acid? Tyrosine!
15
Codon BINGO!!!
16
What are proteins used for again? Proteins go on to cause ALL traits. They are important. Key Point #3: If you change someone’s DNA, that will change its traits.
17
Add to the Central Dogma???? DNA RNA Protein (Trait) a change here… means a change here and here and finally here
18
Guided Practice (GP) Read over key points and your notes. I am going to ask questions, with a 25 second timer. You should be able to find the answer. If not—add it in! Raise your hand when you find the answer.
19
Look in your NOTES! What is translation?
20
Why is this picture showing TRANSLATION?
21
NOTES NOTES NOTES What is a codon?
22
How many bases make up a codon?
23
What do all mRNA sequences end in?
24
What happens when you change the DNA bases in a gene?
25
One protein causes brown eye color, another causes blue. What is different about the DNA that produces these two proteins?
26
OH MAN THERE WAS A ROBBERY But luckily they have some DNA evidence. Weirdly, they asked me to get my Biology class to solve it! Make sure you make a sketch of the suspect! That jerk!
27
Exit Question Convert this strand of DNA to an amino acid sequence. AAACAAGCACCC If you change someone’s DNA, their traits will change. Explain why this is true.
