11.  Additional Options: A Gap Year  A period of time in between high school and college to help define goals, mature, experience the world, or gain experience.  Suggested by high schools and colleges that students apply for college their senior year, and then present their plan to the college and defer college admissions for a year.

12.  Gap Year Opportunities  There are many opportunities and programs for gap years:  Travel abroad  Volunteer Opportunities (some offer free housing and food in exchange for work)  AmeriCorps programs (provide health care benefits, a living stipend, and $5,350 at the end to use toward college)  Work in a field of interest

15.  Everything is done through NAVIANCE  This makes it easier and faster for all parties involved!  Logging onto Naviance will always be your first step.  Go to the DSA Website  Students  Counseling Department  Naviance  Click on the blue link  Username: you student ID #  Password: your six digit birthday (mmddyy)

16.  How to request a transcript to be sent: 1) On Naviance under the “colleges” tab click “Colleges I’m Applying To”

17.  2) Click “add to this list”.

18. 3) Then click “lookup”, find the college and click the link with the college name. Transcripts cannot be ordered if the college is not on your list. 4) Click on the icon that says “request transcripts.” 5) At the bottom of the page click “add colleges.”

19. 6) Notice the “delivery type” logo to the right of the college name.  Red Stamp Icon: Paper transcript will be mailed to the college. Ms. Vliet will mail out transcripts weekly.  Blue computer icon: Electronic transcript (eDoc) sent through Naviance  Blue computer icon with CA: Common Application school with electronic transcript sent through Naviance.

20.  For all Common App schools: Connecting your Common App with Naviance  In order to link your Common App account to Naviance you need to set up your Common Application account and choose a user name and password.  You must complete the Education section of the Common App. The FERPA agreement is found under the “Assign Recommender” tab.  You must complete the “FERPA” notice on the Common Application by checking “Yes, I waive my rights to access…”  Go to Naviance and under the “colleges” tab click on “colleges I’m applying to”. Enter your Common Application email address in order to match your Common Application Account with your Naviance account.

21.  Letter of Recommendation Process: Important first steps before logging onto Naviance: 1.Pick up a letter of recommendation request form from the counseling office and fill out the form. 2.THERE ARE TWO SEPARATE FORMS, ONE FOR YOUR TEACHERS AND ONE FOR YOUR COUNSELOR! 3.Go to your teacher/counselor in person and ask if they would write you a letter of recommendation. Hand them a copy of the form and thank them ! Make sure you are asking a month in advance of when your letter is due! **Make sure to include special accomplishments, such as the Principal’s Honor Roll for counselors to include in letters!

22.   There were a few changes to Common App this year regarding teacher recommendations:  You can no longer have teachers write specifically to one school. Their letter needs to be generic because it will go to every school you apply to.  Ex: no more of - Dear Harvard, please accept Susie, you are her dream school…  Select only 2-3 teachers. You will no longer get to say Mr. AwesomeTeacher’s letters go to NYU and Mrs. SuperCool’s letters go to CU. All the letters will go to all your schools. Common App Changes

23.  4) On Naviance under the “colleges” tab, click “Colleges I’m Applying To”

24. 5) Under “Teacher Recommendations” then click “Add/Cancel requests”. Choose a teacher from the dropdown list. You can choose up to three teachers to send a request to. You may also choose different teachers for different colleges.

25. 6) Enter a personal note stating when your letter is due to the college, what colleges you are using their letter for, and any special instructions. 7) Click the “Update Requests” to complete the request. An email will be sent to your teacher notifying them of your request.

26.  Important things to note:  For Common App Users: The counselor/teacher will fill out these evaluation forms on Naviance and they will be submitted with all your other additional application materials (transcript, etc.) through Naviance. You will NOT enter the emails for teachers in the Common App  Sending Letters of Recommendation from people outside of DSA: Have your recommender email a copy of your letter to your counselor so they can upload the letter to Naviance.
