1942 and 1943 – Combined might of Allies force several victories and begin to push back Axis powers – May 1942: British defeat German and Italian armies in North Africa – Nov. 1942: Soviets defeat 2 nd German invasion at Battle of Stalingrad – Spring – Sept. 1943: US and Britain invade Sicily and Italy Mussolini overthrown and new Italian government surrenders June 1944 – Rome falls and Northern Italy officially surrenders May 1945 (Mussolini executed in April)
