Mercury By Sarah Allen Mercury is a small planet, it's the eighth largest planet. It is the closest to the sun out of all the planets. It's also the quickest planet in the solar system. Mercury has been known for a very long time, no-one knows when it was first seen though. Mercury doesn't have any moons or satellites in it's gravity. Mercury got it's name from the Roman messenger god Mercury or Greek terms Hermes.

Mercury has been known for a very long time, no-one knows when it was first seen though. Mercury doesn't have any moons or satellites in it's gravity. Mercury got it's name from the Roman messenger god Mercury or Greek terms Hermes.

Mercury's Surface Parts of Mercury can reach 800°F(430°C) and parts can go down to -300°F(170°C). Mercury is a heavily cratered planet, a lot like our moon. That is why it is wrinkly surfaced. It has long, rounded cliffs called scarps.

Mercury's Core and Atmosphere Mercury's core is mostly made up of iron, a small amount of liquid material and a thin rocky layer. It's thin atmosphere means it is hot at daytime and cold at night. Venus is hotter than Mercury due to Mercury's weak atmosphere. Mercury's atmosphere is small amounts of hydrogen, helium and oxygen.

Mercury's History Has been known since Ancient times. In the mid 1960's radar studies showed that the planet rotates round the earth once every 59 days. In the 1970's the spacecraft Mariner 10 came close to the planet and was only able to map 40 – 45% of the planet surface.
