Many houses, businesses, and services were destroyed by bombing. These things were not restored to normal until years after the war had ended. A New Coat for Anna is based on a true story told to the author by a friend. In the dedication of the book, Harriet Ziefert writes about her friend, who as a child “waited many months for a new coat and who showed it to me some twenty-five years later,” and about the friend’s mother, “who at the start of it all had nothing - save persistence and determination - and who in the end fashioned a beautiful gift.”
