1 Chapter 11: Ancient Greece Lesson 3 – The City-State & Democracy Jedi Journal (Learning Target Notes)

2 7. I can describe Greek political organization. 1.Organized into separate city-states which included the cities & the surrounding lands. 2.Had an agora for business & public gathering in the center. 3.Many had an acropolis, which helped protect them.

3 8. I can trace the evolution of Greek government from kingdom to democracy. 1.Began with a monarchy, or rule by kings or queens. 2.Switched to aristocracy, or rule by the upper class. 3.Transformed into oligarchy, which was similar to aristocracy but ruling power was decided on wealth & land ownership. 4.Tyrants would get control at times by gaining the support of the poor. 5.The balance of power between the poor and the rich led to democracy.

4 9. I can compare direct and indirect democracy. 1.Indirect democracy = citizens elect representatives to make laws. 2.Direct democracy = all citizens meet to vote on laws.
