3 Halloween Parade *The Halloween parade is this Friday, 1:45 pm. *You can stand outside along the front of the school and watch the classrooms parade out the Kindergarten door and back into the gym. *Students can wear costumes that are not too scary, do not display blood or gore, and do not have weapons. -Please remember to label ALL items.

4 Book It: Goal = 20 minutes of reading at least 3 nights a week. We hope that at least half of those minutes are being read by your child. –The other portion can be read by another family member. If a child reaches that goal for the month, Pizza Hut will provide your child with a certificate for a free personal pizza! October Calendars will be due Monday, November 2 nd.

5 Book Character Pumpkins If your child made a pumpkin character, please plan on picking it up after the Halloween parade. If you are not able to join us for the parade, please find a time to pick your pumpkin up or discuss with your child how it can be brought home. If you would like your pumpkin for the contest through the bank, I would encourage you to pick it up earlier so you will have it for that due date.

7 Reading: 5 Main Story: Gus Takes the Train and City Zoo Word Wall Words: friend, full, good, hold, many, pull Comprehension Strategy: story structure; Analyze/evaluate Phonics: short vowel u; consonants qu and z Grammar: adjectives for colors and numbers Writing: Word choice and punctuation; writing a class story

8 Spelling up, bug, mud, nut, hug, tub, *friend, *good *spelling words and word wall words –Your child will also write a sentence with some of these words as well as words that follow the short e pattern. Be sure to practice other words that have a short u sound so he/she will be prepared for this part of the test. –Keep reviewing words that were misspelled on previous test = they will also continue to be a part of the sentences on the spelling test

9 Math Concepts for this week in class: Counting by 5’s, money, and time Anticipated Homework: Monday: 2.9 Counting by 5s Tuesday: 2.10 Pennies and Nickels Wednesday: No homework Thursday: 2.11 Nickels and Pennies Friday: 2.12 Telling Time

Months of the Year. What is the date? What will tomorrow be… etc. -Weather (What do you wear when it’s 80 degrees, what do you wear when it’s 30 degrees. - More or Less (What number comes before 13? What number comes after 26?)

11 Word of the Week Extra: Each week, your child can receive a sticker for their sticker book by writing down our special word/phrase of the week along with a parent signature. They love stickers! Phrase of the week: Happy Halloween

12 Family Journals Family Journals are due each Monday. Families are asked to read what your child wrote and make a short comment. On Monday, students will receive a sticker to decorate their journal if they have returned their notebook with a comment. It is a great way for students to practice their writing skills and a great keepsake to remember the things we are doing in first grade!

13 General Homework Expectations Mondays: Spelling words and word wall words will come home (practice these words to be ready for the spelling test on Friday Wednesdays: Wednesday work: students complete the comprehension page as well as practice reading the words on the opposite side. When you feel your child is confident in knowing the words and has completed the comprehension page, please return it to the classroom. It is due by the following Tuesday at the latest. Monday through Friday: Math homework will be sent home each day, except Wednesdays. I expect each page to come back the following day.

15 Volunteering The media center is also looking for volunteers to help shelve books. In the past, some parents have volunteered in the library right before coming to our room to volunteer. Please contact them beforehand to see if they have an available opening. Thank you for ALL your help! We couldn’t do it without you!!!
