Understanding Various Animal Urinary, Endocrine, and Digestive Structures and Functions
2
I can identify the structures and functions of the urinary system.
3
The urinary system’s chief responsibility is the excretion or removal of wastes. It removes wastes from the body through the filtration of blood.
4
The urinary system consists of two kidneys, two ureters, a bladder, and a urethra.
5
Kidneys The kidneys filter and remove waste products and some water from blood. In addition, the kidneys sustain water and electrolyte, or mineral, balance in order to maintain homeostasis.
6
Ureters The ureters are thick-walled muscular tubes that connect the kidneys to the urinary bladder.
8
Bladder The urinary bladder is an elastic and expandable muscular organ that stores urine, which is produced in the kidneys. After a certain amount of urine has collected, nerve endings will stimulate the contraction of the bladder and urine will pass out of the bladder to the urethra.
9
Urethra The urethra transports urine from to the urinary bladder to outside of the body. In both males and females it serves as the passageway for the removal of urine
