DISTANCE LEARNING What is it? Distance learning is A method of studying in which lectures are broadcast or classes are conducted by correspondence or over the Internet, without the student's needing to attend a school or college. (Also called distance education).

WHAT MAKES IT DIFFERENT? Anyone with a military ID card can access and use MarineNet, as long as they are in the DEERS database. (Defense Enrollment Eligibility Reporting System) Includes, veterans, retirees, reserve, active duty and family members.

REAL LIFE APPLICATION US Department of Education: 4.3 Million students took at least one distance learning course in 2007-08. $800,000 (4%) of all undergraduates took their entire program through distance education. 22% of all US students with bachelors degress – 760,000 of them – took distance learning courses 2007-08. 302,000 took entire program online, 4.2% of all life science students took their entire program through distance learning.
