1 Lesson 17 Objective: Students will be able to analyze the text in order to explain the connection between diction and the author’s meaning. 3.A.7(Author’s Purposeful Use of Language) Journal Topic: Write the setting and 1 rule from chapter 1 in “The Giver”.

2 Visualizing Close your eyes and visualize the word:“Clock” Picture a clock in your mind’s eye. Now, complete a quick-write in your journal, describing the clock you imagined.

3 Visualizing Sometimes a person’s experience determines how they interpret or understand words. For example, my experience with the word “clock” might be drastically different from a younger person’s experience with clock. I may have visualized a grandfather clock while a young person might have experienced a digital clock. (get pictures of diff. clocks)
