Last term we looked at fairy tales. These were stories that have been around for a many, many years and retold hundreds of times. What else do you remember about fairy tales? This term we are looking at fantasy stories. A fantasy story is one that could not happen in real life. Fantasy stories often involve journeys and quests. They may be set in familiar places but magical events happen. Some fantasy stories are set in imaginary worlds.

Some stories begin and end in the fantasy world. Others start in the real world and move into the fantasy world. Some are set in the real world but magical characters and events occur. In a fantasy story the characters are usually transported into the imaginary land through a portal. The portal can be an everyday object, that looks normal, but is magical….

Fantasy stories can have some of the same characters as fairy tales such as witches, children and talking animals but some characters can be very unusual indeed…..
