Internet: the world’s largest computer network. Computer network: a group of computers that communicate with each other. Services: huge amount such as: e-mail, World Wide Web, Instant messaging, etc Advantages: + Find information: Google, Bing, Yahoo, etc + Stay in touch: e-mail, blog, social network, voice chat, VoIP, etc + Get education: online learning, e-books, libraries, etc + E-business: buy, sell, pay, invest, etc + Computing: parallel Basic Concepts

Dangers from Internet Phishing: a tricky activity by getting victim’s identity, bank account numbers, etc. over the Internet or by email, and then using these to steal money from them. Virus: + Programs spread from computer to computer + Steal your info, destroy your computer + Use your computer to attack other computers Spyware: like a virus but your browse allows them attack your computer. Spam mails: unwanted emails or messages sent to your account.

Safety first: + Don’t use your full name on public websites + Never provide private information to stranger + No legitimate entity will ever ask you for your password. + Be especially careful about disclosing information about kids. + Don’t click links or open attached files in strange emails. Protect from Dangers Softwares: + Anti-virus: detect & delete viruses + Firewall: prevent your computer from intrusions + Frequently update software patches

World Wide Web (Web) Web: + Huge amount of pages of information connected to each other. + Page: a combination of text, pictures, audio, video, animations, links. + Hyperlink(link): a connection to other page. When clicking a link, browser displays the page of link. + Uniform Resource Locator(URL): address of a page. Browser uses addresses to find pages. Browser: + Programs that find Web pages and displays them. + Popular browsers: Internet Explorer, Firefox, Chrome, Safari. + Address box: displays the Web URL of current page. + Favorites/Bookmarks: store URLs. + Save page: store page in your computer to read offline.

Searching A lot of information on the Internet. How to find them? Search engines. Search engine: periodically looks at every page it can find on the Internet, extracts keywords from them, and make a big list. Popular search engines: + Google: www.google.comwww.google.com + Bing: www.bing.comwww.bing.com + Yahoo: www.yahoo.comwww.yahoo.com

Email Electronic mail (e-mail): the most popular Internet service. Every computer connects to the Internet can send and receive e-mail. Web-based e-mail service (webmail):many websites provide free mailboxes. Register to get e-mail account. Some popular e-mail service: mail.yahoo.com, www.gmail.com, mail.live.com. www.gmail.com E-mail address: + Unique address for each e-mail account. + Consists of 2 parts: username@domain + Username & password: when register an e-mail account, you need to specify username and password. Password must be kept in secret. + Login e-mail account: issue username & password.
