Nixon’s Silent Majority Nixon sought to serve “the non-shouters, the non- demonstrators” with his presidency. The silent majority consisted of people that “worked in America’s factories, ran businesses, served in the government, provide most of the soldiers, and give life to the American dream”

Watergate June 1972 Break-in of Watergate Hotel (Democratic Headquarters) The burglars had connections to government officials One had the phone number of a prominent official in the Whitehouse Nixon denies break-in Bob Woodward, and Carl Bernstein – Washington Post July 1973 Investigation leads to requests for recorded conversations in the Whitehouse. Nixon refuses to release tapes from Whitehouse citing “executive privilege”. Supreme Court rules unanimously that Nixon must surrender all of the recordings. August 1974 Transcripts from tapes show that Nixon was involved in the cover-up of the Watergate break in. August 9 th 1974 Nixon resigns as President.

I. Gerald Ford takes over as President after Nixon resigns (1974) from office A. Offered Nixon a presidential pardon 1. Said Nixon would not get a fair trial 2. Would save American the embarrassment of having a former President on trial 3. Lost credibility with many for the pardon

B. Biggest problem facing Ford was an economic slowdown 1. Slowdown often referred to as stagflation: a combination of stagnation and inflation 2. Ford vetoed many Democratic proposals to increase spending to help the poor and create new jobs
