Scotland:  All newly qualified teachers in Scotland are required to complete a period of probation before being awarded full registration as a teacher with the General Teaching Council for Scotland (GTCS). Scottish- trained, newly qualified teachers (NQTs) are eligible for a guaranteed one-year teaching post with a Scottish local authority. This scheme has been in operation since August 2002 and is known as the Teacher Induction Scheme. New Zealand  http://www.teacherscouncil.govt.nz/prt http://www.teacherscouncil.govt.nz/prt Purpose of induction and mentoring for PRTs (Provisionally Registered Teachers)  The main purpose of an induction and mentoring program is to help a newly qualified teacher develop effective teaching practices for the diverse learners they will be responsible for throughout their career.  Through this program of support, the PRT, mentor and the professional leader will gather evidence of the progress being made by the PRT towards meeting the standard for full registration.  At the end of the induction period, the professional leader is required to use this evidence to determine whether all the Registered Teacher Criteria have been met by the PRT.  The PRT also needs to retain evidence of their induction and mentoring program and to submit this to the Teachers Council if requested to do so.
