Statements, negatives, and questions

Present tense BE verb nounEvery sentence has a subject and a verb. The subject is a noun (a person, place or thing) or a pronoun (a word that takes the place of a noun – he, she, it, we, they) The subject and verb must match. –Iamyouare –I am from Colombia but you are from Japan. –Aliceissheisn’t –Alice is a nurse, but she isn’t in a hospital. babyisheis –That baby is messy, and he is on the blanket. –The students and Iareweare –The students and I are at school, and we are happy. –Parentsarethe teachersaren’t –Parents are worried about their children, but the teachers aren’t.

Present Negative of BE We form the negative by writing the word not after BE –I am not the president of the United States. –You are not from England. –The governor of California is not from America. –Our textbook is not cheap. –We are not doctors, and they are not musicians.

Yes/No Questions Yes/No questions with BE are formed by putting the verb before the subject. The rest of the question stays the same as the statement. –Iam –I am the president of the class. AmI – Am I the president of the class? –Youare –You are tired after work. Areyou – Are you tired after work? cousinis –Mary’s cousin is a good artist. Iscousin – Is Mary’s cousin a good artist? –Johnny and Iare –Johnny and I are temporary workers at the factory. AreJohnny and I – Are Johnny and I temporary workers at the factory? watermelonorangesare –Fresh watermelon and juicy oranges are on sale at Superior Market. Arewatermelonoranges – Are fresh watermelon and juicy oranges on sale at Superior Market?
