5 Volcano Notes A volcano is a place (usually a mountain) where magma reaches the earth’s surface.

6 Magma Chamber Lava- Vent- Crater- The opening in the volcano Erupted magma Pit at the top of the volcano

7 Four things that can come out of a volcano

8 1. Lava: molten rock that flows or oozes onto the earth’s surface

9 2. Lahars: flows of mud, rock and water

10 3. Pyroclastic flows: hot avalanches of ash and gas

11 4. Tephra: gases and fragments of rock and lava sent high into the sky

12 Three Types of Volcanoes 1. A cinder cone volcano has steep sides and is made from explosive eruptions of small particles of rock that form a loose pile of volcanic rock fragments.

13 Three Types of Volcanoes An example of a cinder cone volcano is Paricutin in Mexico.

14 Three Types of Volcanoes 2. A shield volcano is built up of many slow thin layers of hardened lava.

15 Three Types of Volcanoes An example of a shield volcano is Mauna Loa Volcano in Hawaii. It is the worlds largest shield volcano.

16 Three Types of Volcanoes 3. A composite volcano is usually cone-shaped and is built up of layers of hardened lava and rock fragments.

17 Three Types of Volcanoes Mount St. Helens is a Typical composite volcano.

18 Three Classifications of Volcanoes: 1. Active Volcano: A volcano which has erupted recently or might erupt soon.

19 Three Classifications of Volcanoes: 2. Dormant volcano: A volcano that has been quiet for a long time, but still has signs it may erupt again.

20 Three Classifications of Volcanoes: 3. Extinct volcano: A volcano that has not erupted for thousands of years and cannot erupt again.
