Igneous Rocks 16 Starter Igneous Rocks 9/3/15 Application: Paste notes here Connection Do summarize it on page 318 in book. Exit: What type of igneous rock would you rather be and why? Practice: Observations 1.What happens when the melted sugar is put in cold water in the 1 st beaker ? 2. What happens when the melted sugar is put in cold water in the 2 nd beaker ? 3. Touch the sugar from each beaker when it is laid out on paper. Write your observations about each. 15 Brain pop with quiz EQ: How are rocks classified?

Igneous Rock

–Igneous rock are classified according to their textures and compositions.

Igneous rocks are formed either underground or above ground. Underground, they are formed when magma deep within the earth becomes trapped in small pockets. Compositions

This type of Igneous rock is called intrusive. It is also known as plutonic rock and is classified according to its size, shape, and position relative to the surrounding rock. Ex. Granite is this type of rock.

Igneous rocks are also formed when volcanoes erupt and lava is on the Earth’s surface.

This type of Igneous rock is called extrusive. It is also known as volcanic rock because it is brought to the surface by volcanoes. Basalt and Dacite is an example of this type of rock.

Textures Have 4 basic textures: –a.Glassy-shiny and look like glass. The materials that make up this rock are not organized crystals.

–b. Fine-grained- made of interlocking mineral crystals.

–c. Coarse-grained- consist of interlocking mineral crystals which are all about the same size. Granite

–d. Porphyritic rock-large crystals scattered on a background of much smaller crystals. TRACHYTE
