2. Read To Someone - Urgency  Why do we read to someone? It helps us to become better readers. This is the best way to practice fluency. It is fun!

4. Check for Understanding  This is a comprehension strategy to monitor the meaning of what you are reading.  One partner reads out loud, one holds a checkmark. Read to the end of the paragraph/page. Partner with the checkmark says, “I just heard you read….” They will be checking for understanding of what was read.

5. Four Ways to Read a Book During Read To Someone I Read, You Read Reading Different Books  Trade off reading one page/paragraph. OR….  One partner repeats the page/paragraph after hearing the first partner. This helps with fluency  Each of you holds a different book.  Take turns reading from your own book. Your partner will listen and check for understanding.

6. Four Ways to Read a Book During Read To Someone Choral Read Reading One Book  Read the same part of the book at the same time.  This may help if you have trouble with some of the words.  You share one book with your partner.  Take turns reading from the same book.

7. How To…  Choose a book Let’s Make a Deal – “We can read your book now if we read mine next” Rock, Paper, Scissors  Choose your own classroom spot Decide how you will do Read to Someone and pick a book. Move to a place in the room where you know you can be successful.

8. How to Choose a Partner Raise your hand as a silent signal that you need a partner. Make eye contact with someone else who has his or her hand raised. Walk over to that person and say, “Do you want to be my partner?” The partner will say, “Sure.”

9. Coaching or Time If your partner comes to a word they don’t know, you should: Count silently to 3 Ask, “Do you want coaching or time?” If coaching, use clues to help your partner If time, sit patiently and wait.

10. Coaching Sheet  Reading Words What strategy have you used? Go back and reread. Skip the word, then come back. Chunk sounds together. What word could fit there? Look at the pictures – the word is right here. I am going to help you sound out the word. I am going to tell you what the word is.  Comprehension I can retell what has happened so far. Fill in the who, what, where, and why. Would you like me to summarize the story for you?
