Reading Fluency How to be a better reader in 7 minutes a day

Reading Fluency Pairs You will be paired with a classmate who is reading at about the same level as you. You are teamed together, so you can help each other become better readers. You will take turns reading your daily passage to each other twice.

Your job as a reader… When it is your turn to read you must- 1.Focus on your passage. 2.Read in a clear voice. 3.Try to read as many words as possible correctly in one minute. 4.Read slow enough so your partner can understand the words that are coming out of you mouth. 5.Read with expression on the second reading.

Your job as a monitor… When it is your turn to listen/monitor for mistakes- 1.Follow along with the passage. 2.Count any mistakes on your hand. 3.Do not count mistakes if your partner corrects them during the reading. 4.Be ready to show your partner what mistakes they made.

Reading Fluency Procedure Coaching Minute 1 MINUTE- 1 MINUTE- partners share mistakes made with each other readers record how many words they read correctly in the 1 st minute partners may ask teacher how to pronounce difficult words

Reading Fluency Procedure 2 nd Read 1 MINUTE- 1 st reader reads the passage aloud for the second time to read more words, with less mistakes and with vocal expression. 1 MINUTE- 1 st reader reads the passage aloud for the second time to read more words, with less mistakes and with vocal expression. 1 MINUTE- 2 ND reader reads the passage aloud for the second time to read more words, with less mistakes and with vocal expression.

Reading Fluency Procedure Coaching Minute 1 MINUTE- 1 MINUTE- partners share mistakes made with each other readers record how many words they read correctly in the 2 nd minute Partners award each other 1-5 Quality Points (QP) based on flow, feeling and clarity of 2 nd reading only

Record Keeping Record your daily numbers on the weekly chart. On Friday, chart that week’s progress on the 5 week chart.

5 Week Fluency Self Evaluation At the end of 5 weeks, write a 10 sentence self-evaluation of your reading fluency progress and effort. 1.Are the passages getting easier? 2.Is it difficult for you to read with expression? 3.Do you and your partner work well together? 4.What can you tell from the 5 week progress chart? 5.Is reading fluency practice helping me? Why or why not?

Reading Fluency Grade 1 “Project Grade” every 5 weeks Turn in your 5 week record and chart with your 10 sentence self progress check Do not lose your charts! Keep them in your “In Progress” folder in the classroom.
