It is used to describe what is happening right NOW.
It is used with words and phrases about specific times, such as:
Today, tonight, this afternoon, now, this summer, this weekend
It can be used to discuss right now:
Right now, you are reading these words.
It can be used to discuss the near future:
What are you doing this weekend?
What are you doing this summer?
