2 Cold War The Cold War is the name given to the relationship that developed primarily between the USA and the USSR after World War 2. The Cold War was to control international businesses for decades and many major disasters occurred- The Cuban Missile Crisis, Vietnam, Hungary, and the Berlin Wall being just some. Tension began between the United States and the Soviet union because they possessed nuclear weapons. The Cold War was the most important political and diplomatic issue of the early postwar period. The main Cold War enemies were the united States and the Soviet Union.

3 Cold War Cont. The term “Cold War” was first used in 1947 by Bernard Baruch, senior advisor to Harry Truman. The Cold War began in the 1945-1948 timeframe. The Cold War ended by 1989 when every state in Eastern Europe allied to the USSR removed it’s communist’s leaders. There are two dates that historians believe the Cold War initiated. Some say in 1945, after the end of WWII. While other’s believe the Cold War started earlier; around 1917 during the Russian Communist Revolution.

4 Causes of the Cold War in 1945 American fear of communist attack Truman’s dislike of Stalin Russia’s fear of the American’s atomic bomb Russia’s dislike of capitalism America’s refusal to share nuclear secrets Russia’s expansion west into Eastern Europe Russia’s fear of American attack Russia’s need for a secure western border Russia’s aim of spreading world communism This all lead to the feeling of suspicion which lead them into mutual distrust

5 Cold War Chronology 1945- ‘A’- Bomb dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki. 1948- Start of the Berlin Blockade which ended in 1949. 1949- NATO was established. 1950- Korean War started. 1952- USA exploded her first hydrogen bomb. 1953- Koran War ended. USSR exploded her first hydrogen bomb. Stalin died. 1955- Warsaw Pact created. 1956- Hungary revolts against USSR.

6 Cold War Chronology (Cont.) 1959- Cuba becomes a communist state. 1961- Military aid sent to Vietnam by USA for the first time. Berlin Wall built. 1962- Cuban Missile Crisis. 1965- USA openly involved in Vietnam. 1967- Six-Day War in Middle East. 1968- USSR invades Czechoslovakia 1973- YOM Kippur War 1979- USSR invaded Afghanistan. 1987- INF Treaty signed.
