Each slide must have an appropriate graphic as well as text. Text must be substantial. Include research on his background/upbringing, major accomplishments, controversies, major life events, apropos quotes, a personal opinion page, and a works-cited page. (Classwork grade-20%)

Wanted to make the USA a major commercial (trading) and military power on a par with GB His ultimate goal was NATIONAL GREATNESS Wanted much closer ties with former enemy GB

War Creating a national bank—The Bank of the United States Being able to tax whiskey producers to raise $$$$ Adding a tariff (tax) on imported foreign goods Encouraging the development of American factories/manufacturing Creating a national army to deal w/ upstart rebels like Daniel Shays, et al. (and Indians)

9 CHAPTER 8, SECURING THE REPUBLIC, 1790- 1815: The Emergence of Opposition OPPOSITION TO HAMILTON’S IDEAS EMERGED IMMEDIATELY JEFFERSON AND MADISON APPALLED AT HAMILTON’S PLANS JEFFERSONIAN SUPPORTERS WERE MOSTLY IN THE SOUTH DIDN’T HAVE INDUSTRIES, HUGE MANUFACTURING BASE OR FACTORIES WANTED FREE TRADE WITH REST OF WORLD BELIEVED AMERICA’S FUTURE/DESTINY LAY IN WESTWARD EXPANSION, NOT IN CONNECTIONS WITH “OLD WORLD” EUROPE JEFFERSON’S IDEAL AMERICA WAS A NATION OF “INDEPENDENT FARMERS”; AN AGRARIAN EDEN ALSO APPALLED BY HAMILTON’S IDEA FOR A STANDING ARMY THAT APPEARED TO THREATEN AMERICAN LIBERTY (DOMESTIC REPRESSION)

THE SOUTH WAS A PLANTATION- BASED AGRICULTURAL ECONOMY/NO INDUSTRY TO SPEAK OF WELL, IN GREAT AMERICAN FASHION…HOLD YOUR NOSE AND COMPROMISE, COMPROMISE (OF 1790)… WE’LL GO ALONG W/ YOUR ECONOMIC AND OTHER PLANS, MR. H, BUT YOU HAVE TO….
