Landscape II Lake Tahoe lies between the Sierra Nevada and Carson Mountains on the border between California and Nevada and has a beautiful alpine surrounding. Maximum Depth: 1,645 ft. Surface Area: 191 sq. mi. Average Elevation: 6,225 ft. above sea level Highest Peak: 10,891 ft. Surface Temperature: 40-50 F in winter and 60-70 F in summer Water Clarity: 70 ft. deep With 72 miles of shoreline, the lake is so huge that the volume of water in it could cover a flat area the size of California 14 feet deep.

Plant Life II Quaking Aspens and White Firs are a commonly found in moist locations in the mountains. Evergreen Conifers (cone bearing trees) are found in the Sierra Nevada’s from 3,000 to 8,300 feet. Snowplants are strange red plants that pop out of nowhere. Some large, fuzzy leaves are called Mountain Mules ears, self-explanitory. Willows and Alders are known to grow near rivers and lakes. Forests along Lake Tahoe contain some extremely rare forms of animals and plants, if cut down, thousands of plants and animals will go extinct.

Preserving the Biome Lake Tahoe is considered a freshwater biome. This means that it is a complex biotic community characterized by distinctive plant and animal species and maintained under the climatic conditions of the region. This means it is important to the ecosystem of the world. However, wild fires, natural disasters, pollution, and human development have threatened the existence of the plants and animals that reside there.
