4 Theme and Objectives Theme Building Tomorrow’s World with Engineering
Explore fun and innovation in engineering Promote understanding on engineering study and future development opportunities Raise awareness on the importance of engineering in building tomorrow’s world

5 Engineering Projects (Each student will be assigned in a team to work on the project. Prizes will be given out for best performing teams.) (1) Mobile app development using MIT App Inventor This project allows students to develop mobile apps with a user-friendly graphical programming tool. The programming tool can be accessed conveniently through a web browser. Students can learn basic programming concepts to develop interesting mobile apps. The mobile apps can also be downloaded to mobile phones (Android platform) easily. (2) Image based robotic arm control To apply image processing techniques to identify different objects (or objects with different colors). Control the robotic arm to put different objects to different locations.

6 (3) Building a wire loop game using Raspberry Pi
In this project, each team will build their own Wire Loop Game using a programmable Raspberry Pi board and some simply circuitries. Through this workshop, students will learn basic programming techniques and circuit theories that are fundamental and essential for them to design small to medium scale projects in their secondary studies. Using a 3D drawing software (SolidWork) and 3D printer to design and print their own creative products.

7 (5) Hydraulic Robotic Arm Project
Students will build a robotic arm driven by hydraulic pistons. The robotic arm is able to swing horizontally, move up and down, and pick up some objects. The size of the robotic arm is fixed, the wooden arm material is provided by the PolyU. Students will learn to assemble the robotic arm. The assembled robotic arm is required to pick and place objects into two distinct containers within 3 minutes. To win, the team must place as many objects as possible within the time limit. (6) Rubber powered ornithopter Task 1: Students will learn to assemble an ornithopter, select an appropriate rubber band and adjust the angle of attack of the ornithopter tail. Task 2: Students will design and fabricate an ornithopter with flapping plastic sheet, rubber bands, long wood stick (fuselage), and long bamboo stick (wing and tail support). Winning team will need to have their ornithopter flying the longest distance.

8 (7) EMG-controlled fishing robot
Students will learn about what is electromyography (EMG) signal (i.e. electrical signal from muscle). By making use of the EMG kit, each student team will design, build and program an EMG-controlled robot arm to compete in a fishing tournament.

9 (9) Stair Climbing Robot
This project provides hands-on experience in designing and building a robot that uses the motor to drive it up and down the staircase. Students will learn about the characteristics of different materials, motor drives and laser machining.
