Electricity Basics: An Introduction to Renewable Energy Remy Pangle Center for Wind Energy James Madison University
6
Voltage (V) = pressure Current (A) = flow
7
Power (W) = work Energy (kWh) = work over time
8
Direct Current (or Voltage) = one direction Alternating Current (or Voltage) = changes

1. Build an circuit with a battery to light two bulbs in series with one switch 2. Rewire in parallel with two switches 3. Rebuild parallel circuit with solar panel or wind turbine 4. Build house 5. Install circuit in house Measure Voltage from Battery: _________ V
12
Wind power is the conversion of kinetic energy in the wind to electrical energy. The wind turns the blades which are attached to a rotor. The rotor spins and that is mechanical energy. The shaft turns a generator which creates electricity. The electricity is then added to the grid.
13
Needed: Conductor – loop of wire Magnetic field – electromagnets Conductor moves within the magnetic field Conductor rotates through a magnetic field Magnets move back and forth through a looped wire
14
Wind turbine blades work on the principle of Lift – like an airplane As the wind passes over the blade, high and low pressure systems are formed due to differences in the speed of the wind passing over the blade creating lift and rotating the blades
