Story of the Bible - The Build Up: The Old Testament The canon of scripture begins with the Old Testament. What do we mean by the word canon? “The term ‘canon’ comes from the Greek term ( kanwn ) meaning a straight rod used as a rule or standard. Because the Old Testament (aka Hebrew Bible) was used as a rule or standard in the life of Israel, and both the OT and NT were used as a rule or stand for the Early Church we today refer to the Bible as the canon, the text where God gives his rules and standards.” Hebrew Bible At Jamnia 70 BC Jerome’s Latin Translation 405 AD LXX: Greek Translation BC 267 The question Of the Apocrypha The Old Testament At the 16 th cen Reformation
