PH 606-613 The Central Nervous System
3
1. What is the function of the nervous system? a.Receive information inside and outside your body. b.Directs the way you respond to this information. c.Help maintain homeostasis
5
2. What is the central nervous system (CNS)? The brain and the spinal cord The control center of the body
7
3. What are the brain and the spinal cord? Brain = part of the central nervous system that controls most functions in the body. Spinal cord = thick column of nervous tissue that links the brain to peripheral nerves
11
4. What are the 3 main regions of the brain? 1.Cerebrum 2.Cerebellum 3.Brainstem
14
5. What is the Cerebrum? The largest part of the brain -Interprets input from senses -Controls movement -Learning & remembering
15
Left Right side of body! Math Writing Right Left side of body! Artistic Creativity
16
6. What is the Cerebellum? Second largest part of the brain (hind brain) -coordinates muscles and balance
17
7. What is the Brainstem? Between Cerebellum and spinal cord -controls body’s involuntary actions Ex: heartbeat and breathing
21
8. What is the peripheral nervous system (PNS)? The nerves that branch out from the central nervous system and connect it to the rest of the body.
22
9. What are the 2 parts of the PNS? Somatic- controls voluntary action (ex: when you tie your shoes) Autonomic- controls involuntary functions (ex: the walls of blood vessels)
