The United States has about 11,500 military personnel stationed in Italy. Italy hosts the NATO Defense College in Rome. Italy is a leading partner in counterterrorism efforts. The two are NATO allies and cooperate in the United Nations, in various regional organizations, and bilaterally for peace, prosperity, and security. In addition to close governmental and cultural ties, according to Pew Research global opinion polls, Italy is apparently the most pro-American nation in the world (next to the U.S. itself), with 70% of Italians viewing the U.S. favorably in 2002, increasing to 74% in 2012.
