What is a preposition? A preposition is a word that shows the relationship between a noun or a pronoun and another word in the sentence.

Compound Prepositions Some prepositions are made up of more than one word. These are called compound prepositions. There are ten compound prepositions in the chart on your worksheet. Note: Prepositions can be in any part of a sentence. Many sentences contain more than one preposition.

Examples of Prepositions in Sentences: Bobby’s pet hamster likes sleeping behind the computer. The preposition behind shows the relationship of hamster to computer. Has your house ever lost power during a thunderstorm? The preposition during shows the relationship of power to thunderstorm. According to my father, my uncle was a carpenter. The compound preposition according to shows the relationship of father to carpenter.

Practice Locate the preposition in each of the following sentences: 1.) My fourth period class is always ready for lunch. 2.) My neighbor broke both legs when he fell down the stairs. 3.) In the morning, the sun will rise at 6:33.

Assignment You are required to memorize all of the prepositions on your worksheet. There are 55 prepositions – 5 columns of 11. It is a good idea to memorize 11 prepositions per night then use the other nights to review. You will need to be able to use or recognize all 55 prepositions on a test on Monday, August 26 th. Keep this sheet in your language arts folder or binder. You should use it to study and to complete various upcoming assignments.
