1 Answer the following questions to the best of your ability independently and silently 1. What is a prepositional phrase? A group of words that begins with a preposition and ends with a noun or pronoun. 2. Give an example of a sentence with a prepositional phrase and identify it by underlining the prepositional phrase. Ex. The birds sat under the trees and searched for food.

2 Identify Prepositional Phrases Main parts of sentence are NEVER inside Prep. Phrase. Find and [bracket] the PP Begin with Preposition (see SAM for list) End with object of preposition Noun or pronoun that answers the question whom? Or what? **words between are adjectives and adverbs**

3 Examples One of the girls in the new blue car is my sister. One [of the girls] [in the new blue car] is my sister. Prepositions: “of” and “in” Objects of prepositions: “Girls” and “car” Adjectives: “the,” “new,” and “blue”

4 Compound Prepositions and Compound Objects of Prepositions Compound Preposition: Students will learn in and about the classroom. Students will learn [in and about the classroom.] Compound Object of Preposition Barbara was walking with John and me. Barbara was walking [with John and me.]

5 *Write down the following sentences. *Find the PP and enclose it in [brackets]. *Label each word in the prepositional phrase directly below it. *Draw arrows from each word to its label. 1. The flowers in the yellow vase are the first ones from our garden. 2. After the play, the teacher praised Gary for his performance. 3. In spite of his good intentions, nothing happened.

7 DO NOW Enclose the PP in [brackets] and label each word in the PP. 1. At our house every person in the family spends one night weekly doing the dishes. 2. Mando was flying his kite above the trees in the bright sunshine. 3. The class walked along the narrow trail around the dinosaur display. 4. Traffic fines are used for the support of the city government.

In spite of the decision of the jury, I am innocent. 4. Hurry and get out of the rain and under the awning. 5. The man underneath the car has been working throughout the night. 6. Since his phone call, I have been laughing at his message on the answering machine.
