3
Team Dynamics “Brazil have Neymar. Argentina have Messi. Portugal have Ronaldo. Germany have a team!” Steven Gerrard What did Steven Gerrard mean with this statement?
4
Team Dynamics The quote from Steven Gerrard emphasises the importance of Team Dynamics. Team Dynamics are how well individuals work together as a team in order to achieve the desired outcome. This can be thought of as the “chemistry” within a team. A team of lower level ability that have excellent dynamics will often out perform a team of more talented performers who only perform as individuals. T - Together E - Everyone A - Achieves M - More
5
Team Dynamics Team Dynamics are influenced by how effectively members: Communicate Carry out their role within the team Support/Work for each other Work towards a shared goal A team with excellent team dynamics is one where all of the performers put the needs of the team before their own individual needs
6
Team Dynamics - Tasks 1)With a partner discuss ways that performer can work well together to perform effectively as part of a team. 2)Select one of the examples you have discussed and consider the positive affects (impacts) this will have on the performance. Consider: The performer The team The opponents The outcome
7
Communication Communication is your ability to share clear and concise information with others. Communication is a two way process that involves both giving information and receiving information. E.g. Speaking & Listening Within activities communication can occur with anyone else involved: Team mates Coach Opponents Referee Crowd?
8
Types of Communication Verbal Communication Clear, Concise, Correct, Complete, Corteous, Constructive Non Verbal Communication Facial Expressions (smiling, frowning nodding etc) Hand gestures/signals Body Language Watch this clip of Basketball star Kobe Bryant communicating during a game https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O3CPq5tIr5A As you are watching write in your jotter the different purposes of his communication
9
Impacts of Communication Effective CommunicationPoor Communication Increase confidence Confusion Clarity – Clear about what is expected Arguments Improvement in performance Tactically Technically Resentment Develop relationships Anxiety/Fear/Worry Reassure Self doubt Anger/Frustration
10
Communication Task - Scenarios Choose a scenario and explain how this communication might impact on performance? 1.After making a simple mistake a player turns around to find a team mate, whose opinion he values, shaking his head. 2.A player in a team shouts for the ball when in space and uses hand gestures effectively to show where they want the ball played to. 3.After making a mistake, a coach verbally provides a performer with feedback that reminds the performer of effective parts of their performance and how to correct the error 4.Before a performance a coach/instructor gives an athlete a long list of instructions using terms that the performer does not understand.
11
A player in a team shouts for the ball when in space and uses hand gestures effectively to show where they want the ball played to. The player in possession is made more aware when a team mate is in a good position and is ready to receive a pass. This makes it easier for the passing player to find a team mate in a good position to pass to. This makes it easier for the passing player to make a good decisions and reduces pressure as he is more aware of the effective passing options he has. As the receiving player is demonstrating they want the ball this will increase the passing players confidence that they will perform effectively when they get the ball. Due to knowing that the player is ready and knowing exactly where they want the pass to be played to, an accurate pass is more likely. Therefore reducing the risk of an error being made. This will further develop confidence and ensure the passing player commits fully to the pass.
12
(Continued from previous slide) This means the team is more likely to keep possession and advance the ball closer to the basket. As the ball is played where the receiving player wants it they will find it easier to control. This will make it easier for the player to carry out their action more quickly. This will give the defence less time to react and give the attacking team a further advantage. For example the player may shoot before the defence can try to block the shot. This will increase the chances of effective scoring opportunities being created and therefore increase the chances of points being scored.
13
Cooperating Co-operating is where you work together with others to achieve a common goal.
14
Cooperation – Impacts of performance Working effectively to execute a tactic such as a zone defence in basketball requires cooperation. If players do not work together when carrying out this strategy then there may be gaps in the defensive structure that the opponents could exploit. In doubles badminton cooperation is needed in order to cover the court effectively. An example of this is where 1 player is responsible for covering the front of the court with the other player returning shots that are played to the back of the teams court.
15
Cooperation – Impacts of performance Cooperation with teammates can be seen when players provide each other with feedback during a performance. This could be to solve a problem they are having during the game or to praise the good work that a player is doing in order to develop a players confidence. Cooperation is important in a range of team sports in order to: Make supporting runs in order to make space or provide passing options for teammates Provide passing options in order to take pressure off the the player in possession and ensure that possession is kept. Provide cover if a player has moved out of their position or requires help when defending.
16
Cooperating Tasks 1.In what ways have you cooperated with others whilst participating in sport? How did this help your team be successful? 2.In what ways have you cooperated with others when developing your performance? How did this help you develop your performance?
17
Contributing to a team In any activity, where you work with at least one other person, you are a member of a team. In a team each member is expected to contribute and this can determine whether a team is successful. In team activities performers have roles that they are expected to carry out in order to contribute to the team. Roles within a team are normally allocated depending on the strengths and weaknesses of the individuals in the team. The role given dictates the responsibility the performer has for contributing to the team.
18
Contributing to a Team - Tasks Watch the following clips of an NBA match. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FpghuiLCDdA 1.What roles does number 6 carry out for the team? Explain how one of the roles he carries out for the team helps them to be successful. 2.Why do you think this player is suited to this role? 3.In what ways can a performer contribute to a team that is not dependent on their role. Explain how one of these methods can 4.Identify a role within an activity. Explain what makes a player particularly suited for that role
19
Contributing to a Team The impact a players contribution has on the teams overall performance is largely dependent on the role that particular player has within the team. Some examples of what the impacts of a player not contributing effectively to the team could be are shown on the next slide.
20
Defensive Problems A player not staying with the player they have been allocated to mark. This may result in that player finding space and being able to create a scoring opportunity. A player not carrying out their role within a defensive strategy may results in space that the opponents could exploit. Attacking Problems A player not making the supporting runs that they are supposed to may result in less passing options for the player on the ball and put them under more pressure when in possession. This could reduce the number of attacking options that a team has which may cause the team to become predictable in attack. If the player in possession expects a team mate to be in a particular position at a particular time they may play a pass to that player. If the player is not where they should be this may result in possession being lost and an attack breaking down.
21
Relationships Relationships are the way in which your team members regard and behave towards one another. Relationships can have a profound impact on the potential success of team performance. You could have a group of exceptionally talented players that on paper should be successful, but if they have a poor relationship then they will almost certainly produce a weaker performance compared to a team who can work together using the strengths of all its members.
22
Relationships Tasks 1.What might cause poor relationships amongst team mates? 2.How important is it for team mates to like each other for a team to successful? Examples of team mates who didn’t get on http://bleacherreport.com/articles/1506187-teammates-who- kind-of-hate-each-other http://bleacherreport.com/articles/1899731-teammates-who- legit-hate-each-other
23
Impact on performance The quality of relationships within a team may effect performance in the following ways: How hard each player is prepared to work for each other How well the players work together There may be arguments during a performance How effective discussions are regarding the performance. How well each player takes on board information they are given and use this to make positive changes.
