4 PLANNING YOUR ESSAY  Complete yesterday’s Note Cloud with both colors. This will be your plan sheet for your essay.  Write a thesis statement on the back of your note cloud. Remember: One sentence A statement not a question Do not use I, me, or my  Write and essay with the prompt stated to the right Head your paper: First and Last Name Date Period Informational Essay PROMPT: Write an Essay comparing the story details of “My Life as a Bat” to those in the video/audio, “Fun Facts about Bats.”

5 Writing Prompt You will read information about animals in Australia. Each text provides information about these animals and their adaptations to their environment. The two texts are: “Australian Fauna” and “New to Australia” Consider the information presented in each text. Write an informative essay that examines how native and introduced species have adapted to life in Australia. Cite textual evidence from the sources you have read.

9 Independent Reading Days We will read The Chosen on Wednesdays. Each week you will have a quiz covering the content and vocabulary of this book. You MUST be reading. This is not a time for make-up work. Music is allowed if your phone is not visible.

10 Portfolios ALL graded assignments must be placed in the portfolio. You will be required to complete a portfolio log, as well. The log may be kept in your folder/binder or in your portfolio.

11 Folders/Binders You MUST have a folder or a binder to maintain notes and specific classroom activities. This folder/binder is expected to be with you during every class. Notes for quizzes and tests will be kept in these, as well.

12 Journals You should each have (1) journal Your journal stays in the class. Do NOT use this for the following: Storing your notes, handouts, weird work for other classes, or graded quizzes or tests. Make sure ALL journal entries are dated and have a heading. No heading=No grade 

13 3 rd Quarter Formatives and Summatives VLT – Argumentative Essay Formative activities will be given 1/6/15 to 1/30/15 We will use Performance Assessment booklet to prep – These DO NOT leave class! No exceptions. Summative will be given Feb. 2 and 3, 2015

14 3 rd Quarter Formatives and Summatives Socratic Seminars Formative activities will be given 1/6/15 to 1/23/15. Formatives will include planning and practice seminar activities. Summative –Socratic Seminar Summative 1/27/15

15 3 rd Quarter Formatives and Summatives The Chosen Formative activities will be given 1/12/15 to 2/16/15 Formatives will include weekly quizzes on vocabulary and the content of the novel, based on weekly reading. Summatives –Reading Projects Due Monday, 2/23/15 –The Chosen Test will be given 2/27/15

17 3 rd Quarter Expectations With the VLT argumentative essay, a new novel to read and understand, strengthening vocabulary, multiple selections to read in our textbooks, and the FSA Writing assessment this 9 weeks… there is a lot of work to be done.

18 Reflection Take out a separate piece of paper. Add your heading (subject: 3 rd 9 Weeks Reflection) and answer the following with 2-3 sentences for each question:  I enjoyed learning ______ during the 1 st semester because…  I can _______ to improve my performance and grade. My plan is to…  My strengths are… The things I will improve upon are…  I am hoping to learn ____ 2 nd semester because… When done turn into class bin. Remember to put a heading on your paper.
