Do Now:

Review What We Know Cell Membrane NucleusEndoplasmic Reticulum Ribosomes StructureLipid bilayerMembrane bound DNA Folded membrane (Rough has ribosomes attached) RNA FunctionControl what enters and exits cell Control cell activity Location of protein production Builds proteins from amino acids

2 Types of Cells No nucleus.Nucleus Small, simple. Have few structures Larger, complex. Have many internal structures bacteriaPlants, animals, fungi, and more

Where did Eukaryotes come from?  Endosymbiosis: The theory that chloroplasts, mitochondria, and other eukaryotic cell parts were prokaryotes taken in by bigger cells during the process of evolution, leading to eukaryotic cells.

Chloroplasts  Chloroplasts do photosynthesis, which provides carbohydrates (food) to cells.

Mitochondria  Mitochondria break down sugar to give a cell energy

Flagella  Flagella are long, whip-like structures some cells use to move

Quick Review ChloroplastMitochondriaFlagella Build carbohydrates (food) Break down carbohydrates for energy Move cells

Movie: “Cell Biology”  Illustrates many different cell types.  Explains differences between prokaryotes and Eukaryotes.  Explains evidence for endosymbiosis.  Describes chloroplasts, mitochondria, and flagella.  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zufaN_ae tZI&feature=fvw
