12 Writing Review All formal high school essays are to have a minimum of five paragraphs. The introductory paragraph must begin with a hook and end with a thesis sentence. Review week three slide show for the basics. However, once we have the basics, it is time to take our writing up to the next level.

13 Body paragraph formula
1st - Topic sentence (what the paragraph is about) 2nd, 3rd, and 4th sentences- two or three sentences with supporting details and examples 5th sentence – transition sentence to link the idea in this paragraph with the idea in the next one. This is one sentence that links 2 ideas.

14 Example of transition sentence
If body paragraph one is about care of dogs, and body paragraph two is about training of dogs, then your transition could be like this: In addition to care, dogs need training to become good pets.

15 The point of transition sentences is to lead the reader through the essay.
You try…link a paragraph about trees needing water and sunshine.

16 Possible answer: Along with water, trees need sunshine to thrive and grow. Please notice that the transition sentence covers what was in the paragraph it appears first, then it hints about what will be discussed in the next paragraph.

17 Which is the best transition?
Because of winter, some birds migrate. Some birds migrate to the South, but other birds stay put to endure the winter. Many birds migrate. Some birds do not. Most birds stay put, but others leave.

18 Try again on these pretend paragraph topics:
Body paragraph 2 is about birds migrating to the South. Body paragraph 3 is about some birds remaining where they are to survive the winter.

19 See explanations Because of winter, some birds migrate. This is bad because it only covers one paragraph point. Some birds migrate to the South, but other birds stay put to endure the winter. This is the best one because it covers both paragraph ideas in order and links them. Many birds migrate. Some birds do not. This is vague, but it is not a transition sentence because it is actually two sentences. Most birds stay put, but others leave. This covers the ideas in backwards order putting paragraph three’s idea before paragraph two’s idea.

20 Bell Ringer – Vocabulary
Approach – to move towards Assessment - the act of judging or assessing a person or situation or event Assume - take to be the case or to be true; accept without verification or proof Benefit - something that aids or promotes well-being Concept - an abstract or general idea inferred or derived from specific instances Continuity -  uninterrupted connection or union

21 Match vocabulary with example
has to do with consistency. If you have the same Spanish teacher for several semesters, that's great .  Your mother probably accepts/believes the fact that you do your homework right after school.  What is this activity? When attendance at a party or an event raises money for a charity a general idea about a thing or group of things, derived from specific instances or occurrences.  Sometimes students need to do this if they need to discuss something with a teacher.

22 Let’s Practice Transitions are words or phrases that are like a bridge between ideas. They keep the reader from getting lost and confused. Transitions are most often found at the beginning of sentences; however, they can occur within the sentence itself. Transition words and phrases act as “bridges” that can: incorporate commonly used words (So; By this time); help lead the reader to the next event (Suddenly, Immediately) alert the reader that additional information is forthcoming to support what has already been stated (Next... then...); introduce a contrasting idea (But, However, On the other hand)

23 Objectives Students will practice incorporating transitions in the handout (Goldilocks and the Three Bears The goal is to select a transition appropriate to the meaning of the sentence and to the continuity of the story. Students will also practice essay writing using some of the “bridge” or transition words they have learned.

24 First Read So Meanwhile Next Suddenly Then By now Lastly At this First

25 So Meanwhile First Next, Then, or Lastly Next or Then Then or Lastly Next or At this By now Then or Suddenly

26 What you do I want you to choose the appropriate transition or “bridge” word from your list for each of the blanks on your copy of the story I just read. Please work together to decide which “bridges” to use. You can place your “bridges” on the blank lines. When you are finished, we will share your selections with the

28 Best Answer Consequently Simultaneously Initially Immediately
Not surprisingly By this time Finally or Immediately

29 Create your own! Some ideas Because of this At the same time Very soon afterwards By now Next Suddenly Just then However But First Then

30 Essay practice: Writing Prompt: The Three Bears have sued Goldilocks for breaking and entering, as well as damage to property. You are the judge who must decide whether she is innocent or guilty. State your opinion as to whether you think Goldilocks is innocent or guilty and use examples in the story to provide support.
