PHOBIA Definition: a persistent, irrational fear of a specific object, activity, or situation that leads to a compelling desire to avoid it. Book Characterization: an intense fear reaction to a specific object or situation. Its level of fear is inappropriate to the situation and is recognized by the person as being irrational.

SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS OF PHOBIAS Physical signs: Difficulty breathing Racing or pounding heart Chest pain or tightness Trembling or shaking Feeling dizzy or lightheaded A churning stomach Hot or cold flashes Tingling sensation Sweating Emotional signs: Feeling of overwhelming anxiety or panic Feeling an intense need to escape Feeling “unreal” or detached from yourself Fear of losing control or going crazy Feeling like you’re going to die or pass out Knowing that you’re overreacting, but feeling powerless to control your fear

SPECIFIC PHOBIAS A specific phobia is an irrational persistent fear of a specific object or situation that is out of proportion to the actual risk. Fear of situation (airplanes or enclosed spaces) Nature ( thunderstorms or heights) Animals or insects (dogs or spiders) Blood, injection or injury (medical procedure) Other phobias (loud noises or clowns) Back

SOCIAL PHOBIA A social phobia involves more of a self- consciousness and a fear of public scrutiny or humiliation in social situations. Being rejected Being negatively evaluated Offending others Back

AGORAPHOBIA Agoraphobia is the fear of actual situations. It is caused by fearing no easy means of escape. Public transportation Standing in line Being in a crowd Being outside the home alone Agoraphobia may be so severe that people will be unable to leave their home. Back
